Brera… a dog I would not wish on my worst enemy and, somewhat paradoxically, the fulfilment of all my breeding dreams. She is an unguided missile – a combination of Auriga's intelligence and the temperament she inherited from her father, Theo. During her first year of life, she probably caused more damage in our household than all our dogs from the previous twenty-five years combined. :-) And yet, after every offence, one look at her beautiful head, long elegant neck, firm topline and perfect tailset is usually enough to soften me again. And if I ever thought no one could move better in the show ring than her mother, I was wrong. Brera carries herself as if the world belonged to her – and, knowing her personality, there is every chance she does not consider that merely a metaphor. She is exactly the kind of liver bitch I had always dreamed of, even though I never really believed I would be lucky enough to have one. Her win at Crufts will forever remain one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments that may never happen again – but can never be taken away from us either. And Brera is far more than a show dog. She is also an excellent worker: perceptive, quick, willing to cooperate, with an excellent nose and a naturally soft mouth when retrieving. Then, the moment cuddling is involved, the confident little missile turns into a rather undignified thirty-kilo puppy whose favourite place is firmly convinced to be someone's lap. I am equally delighted with her health results, as well as those of her tested siblings. Brera is simply one of those dogs who do not enter your life quietly. And I have a very strong feeling that, thirty years from now, when I look back at the dogs and breeding decisions I am truly proud of, she will be one of the very first I remember.
